Walsh was a successful building and railway contractor,
born in County Galway, Ireland, in 1843. Walsh built
the Goulburn to Cooma Railway and apparently made |

enough money by 1888 to build nine three storey terraces.
The
first of the terraces to be built was Avonmore, which
is said to be the best and most commodious in Sydney.
Features throughout the terrace include stained glass,
pressed metal and wood carvings which display John Walsh's
insignia surrounded by the date of Avonmore's completion.
The most obvious is in the entrance at the foot of the
beautiful carved timber staircase.
